<image:caption>The paradisiacal island chain of St. Vincent & The Grenadines in the southeastern Caribbean is an awe-inspiring country of natural beauty. Only 9 of the 32 magnificent islands that constitute this wondrous expanse are inhabited. It is here, on the tiny unspoiled island of Bequia, that our sea salt is farmed. This beautifully undeveloped group of islands, the Grenadines, boast a virginal ecosystem and a splendidly fertile, culturally diverse, and exceptionally friendly community. We’re proud to be contributing to the local economy here. #SprinkleTheLove</image:caption>

A wonderful antioxidant, sea salt has detoxifying effects and its essential minerals can help promote cardiovascular health and boost your immune system's production of antibodies. Sea salt can also enhance the proper functioning of our muscles due to its high levels of potassium and magnesium.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The brainchild of founder Jerry Simpson, Grenadine Wild Sea Salt is a luxurious gourmet finishing salt produced on the pristine Caribbean island of Bequia, in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. As a commercial photographer and film director specializing in food the whole of his adult life, Jerry was immersed in the gourmet culinary scene, often involved with a wide range of chefs and artisanal food producers with clients such as Food & Wine Magazine, Martha Stewart Living, and Travel & Leisure Magazine. His commercial clients included Campbell’s, Kraft, Pillsbury, Dannon, General Foods, Nature valley, Heineken, Burger King, Pepsi, Estee Lauder, Calvin Klein and Neutrogena to name a few. One of his commercial films was singled out for the permanent collection at MOMA in New York City. With a full time move to the enchanted island of Bequia in 2017 after visiting for many years, fascinated by the history of salt, and inspired by the natural resources there, the idea for producing gourmet sea salt took root. An inveterate tinkerer, inventor and problem solver, Jerry’s unique, patented designs for the salt stills evolved after much trial and error with conventional open air solar evaporation methods. You can read more about his inspiration on our blog here. Jerry skill set honed in the culinary world as an entrepreneur and creator, his commitment to the highest level of quality in all things, his love of Bequia and its people, and most of all his passion for the salt, has led to the creation of a world class gourmet brand. #Saltlife</image:caption>

<image:title>Story - Our Vision</image:title>
<image:caption>At Grenadine Sea Salt we are food lovers, nature lovers and serious cooks. Inspired by the beautiful ocean surrounding us and the ability to produce a wholly hand crafted, artisanal product of the highest quality bringing the flavors of the Caribbean into our customer’s kitchens, we remain steadfastly committed to Bequia’s naturally bountiful resources, this beloved local culture, and the creation of an exceptional product. Part of our intention is to expand people’s thinking about salt; its health benefits as well as its use as a flavor enhancer. Salt ‘Guru’ Mark Bitterman of The Meadow had this to say about us: “Stepping off the plane, smells of nutmeg, cinnamon, mango, and coconut will fill your nose--all things farmed locally around the islands. Buried within the lush jungle you will find a small salt farm, run out of a restored 18th century mill previously used for producing sugar, indigo, arrowroot, and cassava. Grenadine Wild Sea Salt was founded by Jerry Simpson. Like so many modern comers to the ancient trades, Jerry is a renaissance man--chef, photographer, inventor, and artist. After falling in love with the island and culture of Bequia he moved there full time to fully commit himself to the creation of unique and sustainable salt blends. Social Impact in the Grenadines - Committed to embracing and preserving the island's culture and the lush nature of the island, Grenadine Wild Sea Salt solely farms exclusively with sustainable methods. The farm also provides the fresh drinking water made through this process to the surrounding community as it is sometimes in short supply on the island. The salt farm, and one other fishery, are the only places offering year round employment on the island. In addition to sharing our own vision for a more connected and human global market, much like us, Grenadine Wild Sea Salt wants to make every kitchen a place of experimentation, fun, and flavor through salt.” #SprinkleTheLove #ThinkDifferentAboutsalt</image:caption>

<image:title>Food Ideas - What are finishing salts?</image:title>
<image:caption>Finishing salts differ from processed salts in flavor, texture, and appearance. With a higher moisture content than manufactured salt, our hand crafted sea salt it retains its crystal structure and does not have the drying out effect of table salt. Our salts are the perfect flavor enhancer, making everything taste better. Science supports this. Our brains aren’t able to detect many flavor compounds. By adding finishing salt to our food, our taste receptors can sense flavors otherwise undetected, literally exploding the flavor of any dish. This is why a high quality, hand-crafted finishing salt is a magical ingredient to any chef. It doesn’t cost more, it pays more, adding more value to a dish than any other ingredient.</image:caption>

<image:title>Process - Our Unique Process</image:title>
<image:caption>Here at Grenadine Wild Sea Salt, you’re buying our process from us as much as our product. Our Sea Salt originates in the pristine, mineral-rich and pollutant free waters surrounding this island paradise that is Bequia. The artisanal process of solar evaporating salt dates back hundreds of years. Table salt and sea salt are both fundamentally made from salt taken from seawater, but that’s where the similarity ends. Table salt is highly ‘refined’ so that everything that is not sodium chloride is processed out for uniformity and mass production. The minute the seawater is boiled, and even some gourmet sea salt brands are, it can lose many of its potent benefits, as well as flavor and moisture content. Many refined salts are processed with anti-caking additives as well. Our patented solar evaporation stills were designed by our founder, Jerry Simpson. You can read about his inspiration for the stills here. These stills allow us to provide the highest quality sea salt, free of any contaminants, while retaining the highest levels of healthy minerals, essential trace elements and rich flavors specific to these waters, as well as providing fresh drinking water for the community. The process from start to finish takes about 6 days. The seawater is collected and delivered to our holding tanks, where it is then gravity fed into trays within the stills. About an inch and a half of water produces ‘briney’ crystals which are then scraped and transferred to drying screens in the two-step process, when the salt is harvested and taken into our clean room to be examined by hand for any imperfections before being bottled and sealed. As our stills are covered by glass, the salt crystals are contaminant free, and the slower solar evaporation at a higher controlled temperature due to the box like structure produces a desirable mix of course, medium and smaller crystals, as well as the coveted ‘Fleur de Sel’ flakes which are mixed in every batch. This combination makes our salt remarkable in both texture and flavor. Our blends are all sourced from locally grown ingredients that are indigenous to St. Vincent and the Grenadines, which we then dehydrate and incorporate into our uniquely Caribbean flavors.</image:caption>

<image:title>Process - From Martha Stewart Living Magazine:</image:title>
<image:caption>“Jerry Simpson's touchstone for artisanal sea salt was French fleur de sel, which is harvested from open-air evaporation ponds. That method wouldn't work in a climate of tropical downpours, so he devised a shallow evaporator pan tented with glass: the solar still. "The sun is our only machine," he says. The first test batches came in sugar-white, with a mixture of glassy flakes that crystallized on the water's surface—the equivalent of fleur de sel—and crunchy grains that sank to the bottom. He sent samples to chef friends in New York, who were struck by its distinct taste. Our Food Editor at Large Shira Bocar describes it as "ancient," with pronounced minerality and hints of chlorophyll—qualities Watt attributes to trace elements in the water around Bequia's volcanic shores.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>In addition to serving as Grenadine Wild Sea Salt’s production facility, ‘The Mill’ on the island of Bequia is a high-end tourist destination and learning center where we host tours, talks, tastings and private events around all things culinary and creative. We have transformed the property into a tranquil, park-like setting incorporating our 140 patented solar evaporation stills and the restored ancient ruins of The Old Sugar Mill which is the oldest structure on the island dating back to the late 17th century. As once part of Spring Plantation where sugar, indigo, arrowroot, cassava, and copra were produced; it is most likely the oldest structure on the island. For the past three years we’ve made every effort to restore this exquisitely beautiful structure as our new home base for Grenadine Wild Sea Salt.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Essentially a ruin when we started, The Mill has now been transformed into the most beautiful version of its modern self. Rather than tearing any of the ancient beauty down, we labored to build support around it, essentially framing its history, as you can see with our ‘ancient wall’ which serves as the anchor to the property. We’ve labored to make sure any new additions to the structure are in keeping with the old. We hope it to be a showcase not only for our salt but for the history of Bequia as well. The ancient history of The Mill dovetails beautifully with the ancient history of salt. This synergy presents with our retail shop, located in what was the former ‘Pay House’ for the sugar estate featuring our unique Sea Salt Bar, where visitors can sample various flavored salt blends, purchase GSS Body Scrubs, apparel, and other gift items. Shop Hours and Tours: Our retail shop, accessible by the Firefly driveway, is open November-April 7 days a week, 9am to 4:00pm. Other months please email or WhatsApp us for an appointment.
